Oh What To Read Next?

I finished the "Urban Werewolf" series - quite fun and light hearted. So I'm on the hunt for something new... has anyone read "Girl with the Pearl Earring"? I loved the movie, which was absolutely visually stunning, and reviews seem very positive of the book.

New Full Color Nook Released Today... does it compare to Kindle?

Did you see the new Nook?? Very stylish, full color... $249 and it only has WiFi!!! And full color... really??? I don't plan on reading kids' books on an e-reader... and pretty much all other books are black and white. So, why do you need full color? And that price with no 3G??? I think it's a stab to try to regain part of the Kindle market... don't think it's gonna' work!

Backups of your books

Although Amazon says you will "always" be able to re-download a purchased book, what about the books that we're sharing?

I did some searching on this, and came across Calibre (claibre-ebook.com), highly recommended by other users. I downloaded it and I love it! It's easy to use, and it will backup everything on your Kindle to your computer. That way, if you accidentally delete a book you've downloaded from a friend, you'll be able to retrieve it!

Calibre also converts ebooks into other formats - I haven't tried that yet.

Another Kindle Convert!

Our volunteer librarian at the school this year, Julie, was very interested in my Kindle when I talked about it. The next day in the mail, I looked at the back cover of the Newsweek magazine, lo and behold, there was the new Kindle - life size. So I cut it our and took it to school to show her... she taped it up on her refrigerator!! And last week her Kindle arrived!!! She loves it!!

I may have to make her an honory Lake DuBay Klub member!

New Members Needed!!

Don't forget to send me emails of our other Klub members so we can get them involved in our blog!

Welcome Charlotte

Charlotte reminded me that although I said she was a member of the Klub, I hadn't actually invited her into the Klub... picky, picky.

So, welcome Charlotte!

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane

I got the book from Susan... I thought it would be a light in-between read... BUT, it's actually a bit of page-turner - hard to put down! Goes back and forth between 1991 Boston and the Salem witch trial era. It's not a real 'deep' book, but it is good!

Book Recommendations

I'll admit I didn't read this one on the Kindle, but it was good book and I think it's worth posting in case anyone is looking for something new.

"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer.

It's the story of WWII, on Guernsey Island - don't let that throw you off, it's quite charming.

Secondly. I am thoroughly enjoying "Juliet" by Anne Fortier. It's told from the perspective of the modern descendant of the 'real' Juliet, and then from the accounts of those in Sienna (not Verona) in 1340... several rewrites of "Romeo and Juliet" including Shakespeare help the story along. It's a page-turner thriller!

New Kindle Club Member-- Frank

Well -- we now have two Kindle owners in our household. Frank has been reading with mine and in order to get mine back, I decided to get him his own. We just ordered it so we're expecting a late September arrival.

He is reading "Lolita" right now. I also purchased "Water for Elephants" recently but haven't yet read it. I also own "Faithful Place" by Tana French -- a mystery set in Ireland. It is quite popular on the best seller lists right now. I enjoyed it and also just finished her first book (from the library) -- In the Woods. If you are interested in any of these, just ask before you download them.

New Book Choice

Okay, I think I've settled on Ken Follett's new book, out later this month... "Fall of Giants".

But I'm annoyed to see that the Kindle version actually costs a little more than the hardbound!! $20 seems high for an electronic download! Hmm, that would only leave me $5 on my birthday card - I'll ahve to find something really cheap! ;)

Buying Dilemma

Well Klubbers, here I am again, in a quandery (quandry??) over what to buy with my new Amazon giftcard. I had almost decided on the Urban Werewolf series when Sue said she had them in paperback and would bring them in November. So I thought I'd move to the next top item on my wishlist - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo/Kicked the Hornet's Nest/Playud with Fire... lo and behold, Barb already has them and is up for "loaning!
Maybe I'll get I, Richard by Elizabeth George - I really liked the Inspector Lynley series!!
I gotta' get something, I'm having withdrawl symptoms!!!

Kindle 3?

Interesting, Amazon is showing the Kindle 2 as being "temporarily out of stock" and they will email you as soon as it's available.

Hmmmm, does this mean that a Kindle 3 release is imminent??

I'm not sure what feature could be introduced to really intice me to get a new one... other than for the sake of having a "new" on and giving mine to Charlotte! I rather like the dark gray bezel that the new DX has, might make it a little easier on the eyes - especially at night.

Anyway, it's exciting to watch and see what happens!

Audio books

Has anyone tried an audio book on their Kindle??? I have a deal for a free download from audible.com. I think I'll pick a book next week and see how it goes. But I have to admnit that I usually tell Mike that listeing to audio books does not really constitute real 'reading'!

Kindle 3 Thoughts

Now that I've been using the Kindle for a little while, I have to say I love it!

I'm watching the online rumor postings regarding a new version, but I have to say it would have to offer a really outstanding new feature to warrant getting a new one. That new feature might be the ability to download or transfer the ePub file type.

Hennepin County Library started lending eBooks this past Monday - however Kindle does not support the file format. there does appear to be a converter provided through Mobi, but I'm a bit hesitant to try it.

I think Amazon will have to adopt the ePub file format soon, since that is the dominant format.
